Global warming refers to the increase in the average measured temperature of the Earth’s near-surface air and oceans since the middle of the 20th century, and its anticipated continuation. It has been estimated that the average global air temperature near the Earth’s surface increased by about 0.75 degree Celsius in the one hundred years ending in 2005. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change posits that this increase in global temperature is due to the greenhouse effect caused by the increase in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
